In response to the news on message notifications in Signal, we wanted to share a few tips on managing your notification privacy.
It is important to know that user have multiple granular controls over notifications on Wickr. To protect your privacy and enforce ephemerality of your content, we recommend to avoid enabling message preview in notifications on mobile (Wickr does not allow for previews on desktop).
Please note, to maintain the privacy of your data shared within the app, your device’s OS does not have any knowledge of your expiration settings. Here is how you can control your notification settings at both the app and device levels.
DESKTOP — Mac OS and Windows:
* We don't support content preview in Mac notifications, so all that users can see in notifications for incoming messages is who the message was from.
* You can further control notifications via your device’s OS. For instance, for MacOS, you can set where notifications display, if at all, in System Preferences>Notifications>AWS Wickr app.
MOBILE - AWS Wickr
iOS:
* By default, notifications are set to display the sender’s name as you set it in your Wickr contacts.
* Notifications clear when you clear them manually or the unread messages’ badge count goes to 0.
* Please note, AWS Wickr admins can disable message preview notifications for all users in their network.
* You can completely disable notifications, in which case you will continue to receive messages, but notifications will not appear on your home screen.
* You can also set your Wickr notifications to anonymous to only alert you of the fact the message was received, without any additional information showing on your home screen.
* You can also enable message ‘preview’ in Wickr settings for notifications, which will add the content of a message to the home screen notifications.
* For more control, you can regulate all your apps’ notifications at the device level. For instance, you can ensure that no message preview is shown on lock screen or in history by changing settings here: Settings>Notifications>AWS Wickr.
Android:
* By default, notifications are set to display the sender’s name as you set it in your Wickr contacts.
* Notifications clear when you clear them manually or you enter the app.
