Wickr is founded on the belief that privacy is a fundamental right essential to any democratic society. It is Wickr’s mission to enable our users and customers to have access to private communications free from surveillance by increasingly sophisticated actors. That is why Wickr’s communication tools are built as zero knowledge systems powered by end-to-end encryption, default ephemerality, and perfect forward and backward secrecy.
While we understand and respect government needs for information for investigative purposes, it is critical to do so within the bounds of the law and not at the expense of user privacy and security. Wickr’s firm belief is that no secure systems, including encryption, should be compromised with the so-called backdoor. It diminishes user safety, including law enforcement’s own ability to protect sensitive national security communications, deteriorates trust, and damages the economy.
As it is critical to rebuild the trust between government and citizens, we support codifying reforms to Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act expiring this year in order to reduce the collection of information on innocent people.

We will continue adding our commentary on the policy developments affecting privacy and security here and in our blog.
