Contact finder helps you find people in your phone address book automatically. If you wish to use Contact Finder, contacts who are on Wickr Me and opted in to use ID Connections to associate their phone number with their Wickr Accounts will populate in your Wickr contact list.
This feature is optional, but it may be helpful to you in connecting with your existing device contacts in a secure manner. You can always turn that off when you no longer want it active.
This feature can be found in the Settings of your Wickr app.
How Contact Finder works in an example where you are adding your number and your Contacts are finding you:
1. You opt to add your number to your account (wickruserA). You add the number and verify with the confirmation text that you do own that phone number.
2. A hashed representation of that phone number (theNumber) is added to your account. Now the two ways a new contact in Wickr (wickruserB) can find you are by either searching for your Wickr username, or by **having your phone number already in their own address book app on their device** then using "Contact Finder" on their own Wickr account, and approving any OS "Contacts" permissions on the particular platform.
Note: In the case that you are the one adding your number to ID Connections (as we are assuming in this example), there is the possibility that someone (wickruserB) who is not currently in your Wickr Contacts and also is not in your OWN address book app on your device can find you. To use the number you add in ID Connections, another person would need to have known your phone number (yourNumber) previously, and added yourNumber to their address book on their device, then run "Contact Finder" in Wickr.
3. "Contact Finder" would then hash (salted to make NOT plain text; like encryption but one-way: it never needs to be decrypted) wickruserB's device's phone numbers (including yourNumber) and run through its check of if any of the hashed phone numbers are a match for any current Wickr account that has an active device registered and have opted to add their number using ID Connections.
4. Wickr will add any Wickr Contacts to wickruserB's Contacts List whose hashed numbers (added through "ID Connections") are a match for the hashed phone numbers being searched for (by "Contact Finder"), and active. In this way, wickruserB is able to contact wickruserA by knowing only their phone number, and not their Wickr ID (username).
